Number 10 - Really Love You

Beatle involvement:

Paul and Ringo
Listenability: 3.5 out of 5

This is the only released track ever credited to having been written by McCartney/Starkey. It started as a jam session involving Paul on vocals and bass, Ringo on drums and Jeff Lynne on guitar. The jam took place on 14 May 1996. Some overdubs were done at a later date, which included Paul adding electric guitar and Wurlitzer piano. Jeff Lynne also contributes some backing vocals. The overall sound remains sparse and may not be to everyone’s taste, but with the Beatles rhythm section being prominent in the mix it’s a track that stands up to repeated listening - despite some impromptu nonsensical lyrics from Paul.

What they said about it:

Paul:

Really Love You started as a jam. And Ringo just started off, he was sort of… [Paul plays drums to demonstrate], up there in that sort of tempo, you know. So I just sort of [sings bass line] dom, chic, dom, dom on the bass which I’ll show you next, and made up this jam called Really Love You.Played it back to Ringo over the phone and he said [imitates Ringo’s voice] “It’s relentless! It’s relentless!” [laughs] He’s a crazy one with the words!

Ringo:
He had a few ideas for a jam, playing his bass. And I love to play bass with Paul, he’s just a fine bass player. Still the most melodic. You know that’s how it came about. We were just jamming and he was shouting these words and they turned into a song. You know, Jeff Lynne was playing a little plunky guitar. He was there, just the three of us and you know, it’s organic, it grows.

 Jeff:
Well we did two jams, and one of which was called ‘I Really Love You’ and it was just a real treat just to play, as a….as a trio and just keep it as a trio and with the minimum time, be it, of overdubbing – just one guitar riff. So the rest of the track is just totally as it was recorded. It was instant basically. Paul just made it up on the spot. And it was quite amazing, he just had the words and he just sang ‘em and we just followed him really.
